Brisket, Baby! My Favorite BBQ Spots in Austin

If you live in Austin (or even if you're just brisket-curious), you already know that barbecue is basically a food group here. And let me tell you, nothing makes me feel more like a true Texan than a tray full of smoky brisket, a cold drink, and some sunshine on my face.

As a busy working mom who juggles real estate, my podcast, and a million other things, I don’t always have time to chase down the newest food truck or stand in line for hours. But when I do have time for BBQ, you better believe I’m making it count. So I’ve rounded up my personal list of top barbecue joints in Austin—both the iconic spots and the underrated gems—so you can find your new favorite without wasting a meal.

Here are my top picks:

Franklin Barbecue

Let’s get this one out of the way first. Yes, it’s touristy. Yes, the lines are wild. But y’all, it’s worth it. Franklin’s brisket is the Beyoncé of Texas BBQ—iconic, perfectly seasoned, and falling apart in the best way. If you’ve never been, go once. Even if you have to take the morning off work. Or better yet—order ahead online (they require a 5-pound minimum, so bring friends).

la Barbecue

This is East Austin’s MVP and for good reason. The brisket is buttery and bold, and the ribs are legit addictive. I love bringing out-of-towners here because it’s still that classic Austin vibe, but with a little edge. Pro tip: get there early on the weekends or you’ll be waiting hangry.

LeRoy and Lewis

This one is for the BBQ nerds, and I say that with love, LeRoy and Lewis. It’s new-school meets soul food. Their beef cheeks and Akaushi brisket (only on weekends) are to die for. They also get creative with sauces and sides, which makes it a fun spot for people who love to experiment.

Interstellar BBQ

This spot in North Austin made Texas Monthly’s top BBQ list, and I’m telling you—it’s out of this world (pun intended). They do a peach tea–glazed pork belly that might change your life. It’s family-friendly and doesn’t always have crazy lines like Franklin or la Barbecue.

Terry Black’s Barbecue

This one’s right off Barton Springs and feels like a rite of passage for anyone living in Austin. Their brisket is solid, the jalapeño-cheddar sausage is next-level, and you can usually find a table outside to soak in the view. Great for casual dinners or when you’re playing tour guide.

Distant Relatives

This is a hidden gem with deep roots—literally. They put an African-American culinary lens on BBQ, and the flavors are totally different than the usual smokehouse lineup. Tamarind-glazed brisket? Yes, please.

KG BBQ

BBQ meets Middle Eastern fusion? Say less. I’m always in for something new, and KG BBQ’s brisket rice bowls with tahini and fresh herbs are unreal. They cook everything on-site and serve it up with pride. One of the more modern spots in town, and a must if you’re a foodie.

Bonus Pick: Sam’s BBQ

This one’s old school and full of heart. It’s been in East Austin since 1957, and it still gives off strong community vibes. It's the kind of place where you feel like family the second you walk in.

Before You Go...

Here are my quick tips for making the most of your Austin BBQ adventure:

  • Go early – Most places open at 11 and sell out FAST.

  • Don’t skip the sides – Mac and cheese, smoked scalloped potatoes, even pickled onions can make or break your plate.

  • Support the underdogs – Big names are great, but the local trucks and pop-ups are where the magic’s happening.

  • Take the kids – Many of these spots are surprisingly family-friendly. Let the littles run around while you dive into that brisket.

Whether you're just visiting, newly relocated, or a native like me, these spots are proof that barbecue in Austin isn’t just food—it’s culture, tradition, and a dang good time.
