How to Keep Your Family Cool During Austin Summers

Austin summers are no joke. When the temps creep into triple digits, it can feel like stepping outside is a workout in itself. But summer in Austin doesn’t have to be all sweat and no fun. With a little creativity (and some much-needed shade), you can keep your family cool and make the most of those sunny days. Here are my favorite ways to beat the heat in Austin with your crew.

Splash Around at Local Watering Holes

Austin has no shortage of amazing swimming spots to cool down. Barton Springs Pool is a local gem, with its spring-fed waters that stay a refreshing 68-70°F year-round.

If you’re up for a short drive, head to Blue Hole Regional Park in Wimberley or Hamilton Pool Reserve for stunning scenery and cool water. For a more kid-friendly vibe, check out Deep Eddy Pool or one of Austin’s many splash pads, like the one at Mueller Lake Park.

Hit Up Indoor Play Spots

Sometimes, the best way to beat the heat is to stay indoors. Austin has plenty of indoor play spaces where your kids can burn off energy while staying cool.

Check out Thinkery, Austin’s children’s museum, which combines fun and education in a climate-controlled space. For active play, Catch Air and Epic Fun offer indoor playgrounds with slides, climbing walls, and plenty of space to explore.

Chill Out with Ice Cream and Frozen Treats

Nothing says “summer” like a scoop of ice cream—or two! Austin has plenty of spots to indulge, from classic favorites like Amy’s Ice Creams to creative treats at Lick Honest Ice Creams.

For something extra refreshing, grab a paleta (Mexican popsicle) from La Michoacana or a shaved ice from Sno Beach. Pro tip: Let the kids pick their toppings while you enjoy a moment of air conditioning.

Invest in a Kiddie Pool or Sprinkler

If leaving the house feels like too much effort, bring the fun to your backyard! A simple kiddie pool or sprinkler can turn a regular afternoon into a mini water park.

Add a few water balloons or squirt guns, and you’ve got hours of entertainment for the kids (and a chance to cool off yourself!). Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Take Advantage of Austin’s Libraries and Museums

Need a break from the sun? Head to one of Austin’s libraries or museums. The Austin Central Library is a beautiful space with plenty of seating, a kids’ area, and even a rooftop garden with great views.

Museums like the Blanton Museum of Art or the Bullock Texas State History Museum offer air-conditioned fun and a chance to sneak in a little education during the summer break.

Go for Evening Outings

Once the sun starts to set, Austin comes alive with outdoor family-friendly activities. Take a walk on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, or head to Zilker Park for an evening picnic.

One can’t-miss Austin tradition is watching the bats fly out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset. It’s a cool (literally!) and magical experience for kids and adults alike.

Embrace Frozen Drinks

Whether it’s a smoothie for the kids or a frozen margarita for you (because #momlife), icy beverages are a must during Austin summers. Spots like Juiceland offer kid-friendly smoothie options, while places like The Oasis combine frozen drinks with amazing lake views.

Plan Early Morning Adventures

Mornings are your best friend during Austin summers. Take advantage of the cooler hours to explore places like the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center or go for a family hike at St. Edward’s Park.

Pack a picnic breakfast, enjoy some nature, and head back inside before the midday heat sets in.

Create a Cooling Kit

One summer hack I swear by is creating a “cooling kit” for outings. Stock it with essentials like handheld fans, cooling towels, sunscreen, and plenty of water bottles. You can even freeze water bottles overnight for a double-duty drink and ice pack!

Having a go-to kit ready makes it so much easier to stay cool when you’re on the move.

Watch a Family Movie at an Outdoor Theater

While daytime can be scorching, Austin evenings are perfect for outdoor movie nights. Spots like Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In let you enjoy a flick under the stars with the whole family.

Bring blankets, snacks, and drinks to make it a cozy and cool outing. Just remember to double-check the weather—you don’t want to trade the heat for a rainstorm!

Making Austin Summers Fun and Cool

Austin summers may be hot, but they don’t have to be miserable. With a little planning and a lot of water, you can keep your family cool and enjoy everything this vibrant city has to offer.
